Awarding qualifications
This year, the journey back to pre-pandemic qualification arrangements continues. Exams took place again during May and June, and non-examination assessments were also completed in many subjects.
Some changes were made to provide extra support for learners sitting formal exams, in the form of advance information, together with a supportive grading approach.
As the independent regulator of qualifications in Wales, our role involves overseeing WJEC and other awarding bodies as they award learners’ grades. During the pandemic, results were different to previous years. Therefore, we have implemented a slightly different approach this summer as we work towards returning to pre-pandemic arrangements.
This summer, national results for WJEC qualifications are broadly midway between the results awarded in 2019 (the last year before the pandemic) and 2022 (the first year that learners sat exams as we emerged from the pandemic).
As always, learner progression is a priority. So, we have worked closely with awarding bodies to agree procedures for awarding grades this year that build upon the usual practices, while also providing a safety net for learners.
Appeals process
If your results aren’t as expected, don’t panic. Speak to your teacher or lecturer to discuss your options. Whether you are thinking about appealing your grade or re-sitting an exam, it’s important to speak to your teacher or lecturer as soon as possible once you’ve received your results.
Schools and colleges can appeal on behalf of a learner, as they could in previous years. Watch our video on appeals for more information about the process.
Where next?
Now that this year’s results have been published, learners and parents may be looking for advice on making decisions on the next steps. Watch our video for more information about the options that are available.
