Qualifications in Wales
One of our key activities as the independent regulator of qualifications in Wales is to oversee the awarding of GCSE, AS and A levels, vocational qualifications and the Welsh Baccalaureate.
Pre-16 qualifications
Pre-16 qualifications are those typically taken by learners in Years 10 and 11. There are three different types of qualifications available. General qualifications include GCSEs and Foundation qualifications, vocational qualifications include VCSEs and Foundation qualifications, and skills qualifications include Skills for Life, Skills for work and the Personal Project.
Post-16 qualifications
Post-16 qualifications are those taken by learners in sixth form, college or any other further education or work-based learning setting. These also encompass general, vocational and skills qualifications.

Our aim is to shape qualifications that are genuinely made-for-Wales and meet the needs of both learners and the Welsh economy.
