Consultation on new AS and A Levels in Cymraeg and Core Cymraeg now live
A consultation on new AS and A levels in Cymraeg and Core Cymraeg has gone live today (17 June 2025).
This marks an important step in the ongoing effort to modernise and strengthen the role of Cymraeg qualifications in post-16 education across Wales.
Last autumn, we shared plans to carry out a full review of AS and A levels in Cymraeg. The consultation on our design proposals for a new AS and A level in Cymraeg (to replace AS and A level Cymraeg First Language) and a new AS and A level in Core Cymraeg (to replace AS and A level Welsh Second Language) — is now live and open to responses.
Following an extensive engagement programme with educators, learners, and wider stakeholders, the proposed changes aim to ensure that the qualifications reflect the needs of future learners and the evolving demands of a bilingual Wales. The new qualifications are set to be introduced in September 2027.
The consultation, hosted on our dedicated digital engagement platform, invites feedback from educators, learners, schools, further education colleges, others in the education sector, and the wider community. Running until 12 September 2025, it offers a unique opportunity to influence how Cymraeg is taught and assessed at an advanced level.
The proposals aim to create qualifications that are:
- relevant and engaging for learners
- manageable for educators and centre
- valued by users of qualifications, including employers, universities, and the wider community
Heidi Brown, Senior Qualifications Manager at Qualifications Wales, said:
“We want to ensure that these qualifications reflect the diverse experiences and interests of all learners of Cymraeg in Wales, and that they help build a confident, skilled bilingual workforce - including future educators who can teach Cymraeg and teach through the medium of Welsh.
We encourage our partners and and anyone else with an interest in how Cymraeg is taught to share their thoughts and feedback with us.”
