More Welsh-medium sport and public services qualifications to be available following review

The importance of sport and public services qualifications, including the need for additional sports qualifications to be available through the medium of Welsh, has been highlighted in a report by Qualifications Wales.

Phase 2 sector reviews focus on reviewing the current and future availability of qualifications for full-time post-16 further education, sixth form schools and apprenticeships; and identifying opportunities to maximise the availability of Welsh-medium vocational qualifications.

Philip Blaker, Chief Executive of Qualifications Wales said, “Sport and public services sectors employ a significant number of people across Wales, and it is important that the qualifications provide learners with the skills needed by employers.

‘Through our sector review we’ve worked with awarding bodies and stakeholders in the sector to address the issues that we identified and to ensure that more sport and public services qualifications are available through the medium of Welsh.”

“Employers and learning providers also expressed a desire for mental health awareness content given the importance of mental health awareness and well-being in the sports industry.

“We have already shared and discussed the findings with our stakeholders and highlighted our Welsh Language Support Grant so that awarding bodies have the support to offer more qualifications through the medium of Welsh.

“Our focus is now on increasing awareness and providing up-to-date information for learning providers about the qualifications that are available for learners.
