Overview of November 2023 results

Well done to learners in Wales receiving results today for exams sat last November.

During the November 2023 exam series, learners entered four GCSE subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Mathematics – Numeracy, and Welsh Language. We have previously published official statistics on the entries - you can find out more and read the full report here.

There were 22,505 entries in November 2023, up 10.3% from 20,410 in 2022. Total entries for November 2023 were similar to 2018 and 2019 entries but were notably higher than in both 2020 and 2021.

Mathematics - Numeracy remains the largest November entry subject, making up 53.4% of total entries in 2023, compared to 51.4% in 2022. The majority (90.4%) of November 2023 GCSE entries were for Year 11 learners, a similar proportion as in 2022.

This was the first exam series of the 2023-24 academic year, where we will oversee a return to pre-pandemic assessment arrangements. We closely monitored WJEC’s delivery of the series, and the approach taken to awarding grades. We are confident that agreed principles and suitable processes were followed and that the awards were as fair as possible to learners.

WJEC has published results for the series on its website and the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) has also published its overview of the series.
