Qualifications Wales committed to the Welsh language
We are very proud to be an organisation that is committed to the Welsh language.
We also recognise that the qualification system has an important part to play in helping to achieve the broader aims of Cymraeg 2050.
We are pleased to be working closely with partners such as the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and Welsh Language Commissioner to increase the availability of Welsh-medium qualifications so that learners can take qualifications through the language of their choice.
Today we have published our decisions on the rules which awarding bodies will need to comply with when promoting and facilitating Welsh-medium qualifications. To find out more, read our decisions report.
Dafydd Trystan, Registrar of Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol said: “We are very pleased that Qualifications Wales is working to increase the awareness and the availability of Welsh-medium qualifications. This aligns with one of our objectives at the Coleg which is to provide increased Welsh-medium provision and opportunities for learners in post-16 education. We will continue to work in partnership with Qualifications Wales to provide further Welsh-medium opportunities for learners across Wales.”
On Wednesday 9 August (1.30-2.15pm), we will hold a webinar to provide awarding bodies with an overview of the consultation outcomes, and an opportunity to ask any questions relating to our decisions. If you are interested in attending this event, please register here.
We will also be holding an event at the National Eisteddfod to raise awareness of these decisions. We will have guest speakers from the Welsh Language Commissioner's office, City & Guilds and Agored Cymru. Anyone is welcome to attend this event.

We also have a Choice for All strategy which clearly sets out our commitment to Cymraeg (the Welsh language) and our aim to increase the availability of Welsh-medium qualifications.
It also emphasises our intention to work with awarding bodies and other partners to contribute towards Welsh Government’s Cymraeg 2050 priorities.
Choice for All sets out four strategic areas of focus:
- prioritising qualifications to be made available in Welsh in full-time education, post-16 settings and apprenticeships
- strengthening support for awarding bodies and their capacity to deliver Welsh-medium qualifications
- revising our Welsh Language Support grant to focus on priority areas, new qualifications and innovative applications
- improving information and date for learners, schools and colleges, and for our regulatory purposes.
David Jones, Chair at Qualifications Wales said: “Since we launched our Choice for All strategy in 2020 – which aims to increase the availability of Welsh-medium qualifications – we have been clear that information about these qualifications needs to be widely shared and easily accessible. Proactive promotion can empower schools and colleges and encourage learners to register for qualifications in Welsh.”
“We would like to thank everyone who engaged with us and responded to the consultation – your input has been important in finalising our decisions. Achieving our strategic aim will continue to require close collaboration and policy co-ordination across a wide range of stakeholders. We are committed to working together with awarding bodies to not only support them in complying with our rules but strengthening their ability to deliver the Cynnig Cymraeg.”
We also implement a Welsh Language Scheme, which sets out how we deliver our functions through the medium of Cymraeg as well as in English.
