Qualifications Wales Launches Cymraeg Strategy at the National Eisteddfod

Qualifications Wales has launched its new Cymraeg Strategy 2025–2030 at the National Eisteddfod in Wrexham, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to embedding Cymraeg and bilingualism at the core of the qualifications system.

The launch event, held on the Eisteddfod Maes in Wrexham, featured a panel discussion with key voices. The conversation featured Efa Gruffudd Jones, Welsh Language Commissioner as well as our Chair David Jones OBE DL, and Llinos Roberts, Head of Communications and the Welsh Language at Coleg Cambria. Together, they explored the strategy’s ambitions, and the collaborative effort needed to realise a truly bilingual qualifications system. They also discussed the Cymraeg-related opportunities and challenges faced in education and beyond.

A System-Wide Commitment to Cymraeg

The Cymraeg Strategy 2025–2030 is the first of its kind for Qualifications Wales, bringing together all of the organisation’s Welsh language-related activities under one cohesive framework. It builds on the foundations laid by the previous Dewis i Bawb / Choice for All strategy and reflects the organisation’s evolving role as a regulator and reformer of qualifications in a bilingual nation.

At its core, the strategy is structured around five strategic pillars:

  • Reforming and regulating Welsh-medium qualifications

  • Embedding the Welsh language in communications and engagement

  • Integrating Cymraeg into organisational culture and operations

  • Using research, data, and technology to support the language

  • Monitoring and evaluating progress with transparency and accountability

The strategy also outlines how Qualifications Wales will work with key partners such as Medr, the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, and awarding bodies to deliver on these ambitions.

Leadership and Collaboration at the Forefront

David Jones OBE DL, Chair of Qualifications Wales, said:

“This strategy is a clear statement of our ambition to see Cymraeg thrive across the qualifications system. It reflects our belief that every learner in Wales should have the opportunity to learn, achieve, and succeed in the language of their choice.”

Ashok Ahir, Director of Communications and Engagement at Qualifications Wales, added:

“We are proud to be part of the national effort to promote Cymraeg. This strategy not only sets out our goals but also how we will work collaboratively with others to achieve them. It’s about making Cymraeg a visible, natural part of every learner’s journey, as well as how we work as an organisation.”

Looking Ahead

The Cymraeg Strategy will be reviewed regularly, with progress reported annually through Qualifications Wales’ compliance and performance reports. A cross-organisational working group will oversee its implementation, ensuring that the strategy remains dynamic and responsive to the needs of learners and the wider education system.

The National Eisteddfod, the largest annual cultural festival in Europe,  celebrates Welsh culture and language. Launching the strategy at this festival reflects Qualifications Wales’ s  renewed commitment to ensuring that Cymraeg continues to flourish—not just in the classroom, but across every aspect of qualifications in Wales.
