Survey of public opinions of non-degree qualifications in Wales

We have published our latest Public Confidence Survey report.

This report offers valuable insights into public attitudes towards qualifications in Wales. We commissioned Beaufort Research to conduct an annual survey to measure confidence in non-degree qualifications in Wales and in the qualification system.

The report provides results for the 2024 survey, following earlier surveys undertaken in 2017 to 20231. As in previous years, the research was conducted on the September Beaufort Wales Omnibus survey which interviews a representative sample of 1,000 Welsh adults.

The research found that public confidence in AS/A levels and GCSEs remained high in Wales in 2024. The composite confidence score for both AS/ A levels and for GCSEs increased significantly2 year on year. The AS/ A level score rose to 3.75 out of 5, from 3.65 in 2023, while the GCSE score increased to 3.81 out of 5, from 3.71 in 2023.  There is no longer any significant difference between public confidence scores for GCSEs and AS/ A levels.

Given the relative stability of the results over the years, we will conduct the Public Confidence Survey biennially This change will allow us to continue monitoring public confidence.

Starting with the next survey round, which will take place this year, we will be adding new questions to reflect the evolving landscape of qualifications. Additionally, we will include a question to measure public opinion on the equality of opportunity within the qualification system and qualifications in Wales.
