Entries and late entries for GCSE and A level in Wales: 2021/22 academic year
An annual release that presents data on the number of entries and late entries for GCSE, AS and A level qualifications in Wales.
Key Points:
- there were 863,095 GCSE entries in 2021/22. Of these 15.1% were late entries
- there were 88,715 A level entries and 82,810 AS entries in 2021/2022
- 9.7% of total A level entries and 11.8% of AS entries were late entries.
- 332,975 GCSE certificates were awarded in 2021/22, a decrease of 2.1% compared to 2020/21
- 75,400 AS and A level certificates were awarded in 2021/22, a decrease of 4.6% compared to the previous year. This decrease was largely driven by a decrease in AS certificates while A level certificates increased
- due to the cancellation of summer exams in 2020 and 2021, and the different grading approach in summer 2022, figures for 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22 are not directly comparable with each other or any other years
For the purposes of these statistics, an entry is counted as a learner being put forward for an individual assessment. The definition of a late entry is set out in the background notes which accompany this release. The number of late entries does not necessarily represent the number of entries for which a late fee was applied.
For information on qualification-level entries in summer 2022, as well as commentary on external factors which may have influenced changes in entries, please see Provisional Entries for Summer 2022 GCSEs, AS, A levels and Skills Challenge Certificate for Wales.
