Malpractice in GCSE, AS and A level in Wales: summer 2024 exam series

An annual release that presents data on the number of malpractice penalties and offences in Wales for GCSE, AS and A level qualifications.

Key Points:

  • 275 penalties were issued to students in summer 2024, down 11.3% from 2023.
  • In summer 2024, approximately one penalty was issued for every 4,000 entries.
  • Mobile phones continue to be the most common reason for a penalty to be issued. 34.2% of penalties in summer 2024 were issued due to students taking a mobile phone into the exam room.
  • 15 penalties were issued to centre staff for malpractice, and fewer than five penalties were issued to centres.
