Reviews of marking and moderation for GCSE, AS and A level: summer 2024

An annual release that presents data on the number of reviews of marking and moderation in Wales for GCSE, AS and A level qualifications.

Due to the cancellation of summer exams in 2020 and 2021, there is no reviews of marking data for these years.

Key Points:

  • There were 6,640 GCSE reviews requested following the summer 2024 exam series. This is 28.6% higher than in summer 2023, when there were 5,165 reviews, and 29.0% below 2019.
  • 323,175 GCSE grades were issued in summer 2024. 1.4% of all GCSE grades awarded were challenged and 0.3% of all GCSE grades were changed.
  • There were 2,520 reviews of marking for AS or A level assessments sat in the summer 2024 exam series. This represents an increase of 47.1% compared to summer 2023, and a decrease of 13.1% compared to 2019.
  • 74,560 AS and A level grades were issued in summer 2024, 2.6% of all AS and A level grades awarded were challenged and 0.4% were changed.
