Vocational and Other Qualifications Quarterly: Quarter 2 (April to June) 2024 for Wales

A quarterly release that presents data on vocational and other qualification certifications for Wales for the latest quarter.

Revision note

This release was revised on 21 October 2024, after initial publication on 19 September 2024, as corrected data was submitted by one awarding body after publication.

All sections of the release and data tables were affected by the error, except for the approved vocational qualifications data. The revision has particularly affected data for the following qualification groups:

  • qualifications at entry level, level 1, level 2 and level 3
  • qualifications in the ‘Agriculture, Horticulture and Animal Care’ and ‘Preparation for Life and Work’ sector subject areas
  • Essential Skills Wales qualifications

The revision affects data from Q3 2023 to Q2 2024 inclusive. The scale of the revision to total certificates for each quarter is as follows:

This revised release provides corrected figures for Q2 2024 and the period July 2023 to 2024, as well as revised quarterly and annual totals for all affected quarters (table 1). The dataset provides correct quarterly certificate figures for individual qualifications. If you require revised aggregate figures (tables 2 to 12) for a quarter or annual period not covered by this release, please contact us at statistics@qualifications.wales.

Key Points:

  • 70,510 certificates were awarded in quarter 2 of 2024. This is a 23.7% increase compared to the same quarter in 2023.
  • Between July 2023 and June 2024, 287,765 certificates were awarded, an increase of 11.8% compared to the previous year.
  • Compared to Q2 2023, 12 of the 15 sectors saw an increase in certificates in Q2 2024. The largest proportional increase was in ‘History, Philosophy and Theology’.
  • Compared to Q2 2023, 6 of the 10 levels saw an increase in certificates in Q2 2024. Level 2 qualifications saw the largest increase in the number of certificates.
